Baruthani Ekadashi, is also known as Varuthani Ekadashi which occurs during the dark fortnight of the month of

Vaisakha ( April – May ). According to Lord Krushna ( Krishna ), who observe the festival with complete fast on this sacred day has his sins completely removed, obtains continuous happiness, and achieves all good fortune. On this
holy day devotee should give-up gambling, sports, sleeping during the daytime, betal nuts and its leaf, brushing one’s teeth, spreading rumors, faultfinding, talking to the spiritually fallen, anger, and lying. One should keep an all-night vigil, praying to God, singing devotional songs and hymns in the company of family members.

Like other Ekadashi, Lord Bishnu is the prime Lord to worship, however on Varuthini Ekadashi particularly his fifth avatar Vamana is worshiped . One should observe a fast (upavasa) and have only one meal. One should not eat meat, black gram, red lentil, chickpea, honey, betel nut, paan (betel nut leaves) and spinach. Eating in Bell metal utensils and eating in someone else’s house is prohibited. The Havishyanna food ( boiled food without spices, salt and oil ) offered to the yajna ( fire sacrifice ) on the previous day ( 10th lunar day – Dashami ) should be consumed by the people observing this fast.
