Putrada Ekadashi Brata as told By Lord Krisna To Maharaj ( King ) Yudhistir, blesses the devotee with a good and healthy son and ever lasting fame for many generation .
As told the story by Lord Krisna, mentioned in Bhavishyottara Purana, King Mahijit was a sucessfull and victorious king but had no son. He had done many dharmik rituals like charities, good deeds and observed many homas, yagnas and yagas (sacrifices) but he has not find any result.
Sage Lomash, who was born from the hair of Lord Brahma, told the the King Mahijit committed a sin in his previous birth which made him childless in this birth. In his previous birth, he had drove a cow and her newly born calf to drink water at lake.
Sage Lomash told about Putrada Ekadashi or Pavitra Ekadasi vrata to King Mahijit’s request. King Mahijit got a handsome and healthy son, after observed Putrada Ekadashi with great reverence. The story follows below.
According to the legend, Suketuman, the king of Bhadravati and his queen Shaibya were upset due to the deficiency of progeny. The couple was worried about their lost souls after death due to the absence of any Shraadh ritual as they don’t have any son to perform such rites. On frustration, Suketuman left his kingdom and went to the forests. Wandering the forests for few days, the king reached the ashram of some sages on the bank of Mansarovar on the day of Putrada Ekadashi. After knowing the reason for king’s frustration, the sages advised Suketuman to observe the fast pf Putada Ekadashi to attain a son. Suketuman followed the advised of the sages and returned to his kingdom to observe the Putrada Ekadashi fast along with his wife.
