About 100 elderly and disabled persons from various slums in the city visited the Jagannath temple in Puri on Wednesday, thanks to the Bhubaneswar Autorickshaw Mahasangha.
The initiative was part of the Joy of Giving Week celebrations, which began on Wednesday.
“I was not hopeful that I would ever be able to see Lord Jagannath again. It was made possible by these people,” said Kulamani Sahu, a senior citizen from Salia Sahi.
People from different sections of the society – homemakers, professionals, and students – came out in large numbers to take part in the activities.
About 300 children from two slums visited places such as the Regional Science Centre, the planetarium and the Regional Museum of Natural History on Wednesday. They also enjoyed a special science magic show, astronomy show and watched environmental films. The children’s day out was organized by Hamara Bachapan, a voluntary organization.
Volunteers of Bakul Foundation went to nine orphanages, 18 anganwadis and five slums in the city for various welfare activities. Such events were also conducted in towns such as Cuttack, Rourkela, Sambalpur, Berhampur, Paradip and Dhenkanal by volunteers of the foundation.
