The state government has identified seven major roads in Puri for renovation, ahead of Nabakalebar in 2015.
While reviewing the preparations for Nabakalebar, chief secretary Jugal Kishore Mohapatra recently asked the works department to finalize the tender process of the roads: Mochi Sahi Chhak to railway station via Jhadeswari Temple, Dolamandap Sahi to Darjipokhari Chhak via Heragohiri Sahi, Ram Mandir to helipad via Sadar Block office, Balighai Chhak to Gopalpur PWD Road, Jaduani Library Chhak to PKDA office, Hatisala Chhak to Mangalaghat and Gandua Choura Chhak to Bidhaba Ashram Chhak via Manikanika Sahi.
These apart, three internal roads – Coco Palm Hotel to Bidhaba Ashram, Chakratirtha Road and Red Cross Road – would be repaired. “Work on two other internal roads (Coco Palm to Lokanath Temple and Atharnala to Bus Stand), identified under the project, was completed recently,” said a senior officer of the works department .
Since the Jagannath Temple Administration (JTA) expects over 25 lakh pilgrims during Nabakalebar (when idols of presiding deities of Jagannath Temple are replaced), the chief secretary instructed the district collector to develop adequate parking lots. “We have identified 14 sites for the purpose. The works department will develop the parking lots,” collector (Puri) Naba Kumar Nayak said. “There will be temporary parking lots at different places on the outskirts of Puri,” he said.
To decongest the city, the government had also decided to construct a new bus stand at Malatipatpur. Sources said JTA has agreed to sell a 10-acre land to the Odisha State Road Transport Corporation for the bus stand.
