In the month of Magha, as the grip of winter begins to loosen, a significant ritual takes place at the abode of Lord Jagannath. From the radiant fifth day of Basanta Panchami in February to the splendid tenth day of Falgun in March, a period stretching from Basanta Panchami to Dola Purnima, the attire of the deities undergoes a transformation. This is when the divine figures adorn themselves in JAMA LAGGI BESHA a modified form of attire resembling shirts, made from fine silk-colored cloth.
During this transitional phase, when the chill of winter fades, the deities are embellished with 30 pieces of resplendent gold ornaments. Additionally, they are graced with four pieces of Patas, each measuring 2 yards by 1.5 yards, adding to the grandeur of their appearance. This ceremonial change in attire symbolizes the ushering in of a new season, as nature begins to shed its wintry veil, and the promise of spring fills the air.
