Taking a cue from Shirdi and Tirupati temples, the 12th century shrine administration would construct a low-cost restaurant over an acre adjacent to the Town police station on Grand Road in Puri.
“The design and budget estimate of the project would be finalized soon. Pure vegetarian food would be served to the devotees at affordable prices,” temple’s chief administrator Arvind Padhee told TOI. The project would be taken up in public-private-partnership mode. “A private party would operate the restaurant,” said Padhee. The restaurant would not sell Mahaprasad, offered to the deities daily, he added.
The proposed restaurant would be made operational before 2015 Nabakalebar of the presiding deities of Jagannath temple. It is an ancient ritual when the idols of Jagannath, Balabhadra, Subhadra and Sudarshan are replaced.
Besides, plans are afoot to construct more restaurants in Puri and Bhubaneswar. The temple administration would soon supply Mahaprasad in Bhubaneswar.
At present, the temple runs two low-cost guesthouses (Nilachal Bhakta Nivas and Nilachal Yatri Nivas) in Puri. Recently, the shrine body announced to sign an MoU with Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) to start housing projects on temple land in and around Bhubaneswar.
In a related development, the temple administration on Friday demolished some structures at the site where the proposed Nabakalebar Tower would be constructed. The ultra-modern complex would accommodate a photo gallery, a state-of-art library and the proposed FM radio station. has decided to foray into catering service.
